Acne is a condition common in puberty, but it can also occur later in life. It is a highly visible condition, usually manifesting on the face as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples and pustules, although it can also occur elsewhere on the body and result in scars. Generally, acne is not a permanent condition, as it tends to peak during times of heightened hormonal activity. Acne is caused by male hormones that over-stimulate the sebaceous glands, causing sebum oils to build up under the skin. |

Nearly everyone will suffer from acne at some time in life. Acne typically occurs for a brief period during puberty, but it may reappear (or appear for the first time,) later in life. There are many ways of treating acne, from topical products to proper diet and lifestyle.

Reasons Why Acne Occurs:
• Hormones: From puberty to pregnancy, heightened hormonal activity can lead to outbreaks. Some women even notice outbreaks during the course of their menstrual cycle.
• Diet: Although scientists have no been able to find any definitive link between diet and acne, it’s always best to maintain a healthy, vitamin-rich diet.
• Heredity: Acne can run in families, although science has not been able to pinpoint the exact genetic factor.
• Stress: By causing the adrenal glands to go into overdrive, stress can produce the hormones that are thought to cause acne.
• Other factors: From the cosmetics we use to the environment we live in, just about anything can be a contributing factor to an acne outbreak.
